Farmers’ Market Pavilion: A New Chapter for the Market & Community

The Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is advancing the long-planned Farmers’ Market Pavilion. An all-season, multi-use structure designed to strengthen the farmers’ market experience while providing a flexible community gathering space.

DDA staff is now working with Beckett & Raeder to prepare final construction drawings, which will be included in the overall bid documents for the Lot B redevelopment project. Once a contractor is selected, both the DDA Board and the City Commission will need to authorize the expenditure of funds. Construction could begin as early as next spring.

The Farmers Market Pavilion will enhance downtown as a year-round gathering space for residents, visitors, and local businesses. It will support local agriculture and food entrepreneurs by offering a modern, flexible, and accessible space for farmers and artisans. The market also expands access to fresh, nutritious foods – including for customers using food assistance benefits—and remains a strong economic driver for downtown. A 2016 survey found that 77% of market visitors planned to spend money at nearby businesses on market days.

Working in partnership with Beckett & Raeder and the City Engineering team, the DDA is finalizing construction documents for the Pavilion and the reconstruction of Lot B, ensuring both projects move forward as one coordinated effort. The Pavilion’s design is also being aligned with the future Boardman/Ottaway Riverwalk, creating a stronger connection between the market, the riverfront, and the surrounding district.
