THE SARA HARDY DOWNTOWN FARMERS MARKET IS THE BEST PLACE TO FIND LOCALLY GROWN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS.

Get local produce, baked goods, flowers and plants every Wednesday and Saturday through October.

THE MARKET’S MISSION

The Sara Hardy Downtown Farmers Market is operated by the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and is managed by SEEDs (The Market Manager). The purpose of the Market is to create a sales venue for local area farmers, provide opportunity for consumers to purchase quality farm-grown goods, to provide a community gathering place, and to promote and stimulate economic development and create traffic in the Downtown area.

ONLINE MARKETPLACE LAUNCHING MAY 2020

The DDA launched an online marketplace for the Sara Hardy Downtown Farmers Market on May 2, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and CDC recommendations regarding large gatherings, the postponement of the Season Opener was recently announced.  The DDA has been working closely with the Michigan Farmers Market Association and the State of Michigan on guidelines to provide easy access to fresh food from our local farmers by offering a physical market with a new layout and procedures that adhere to social distancing and safety requirements.  The DDA is targeting the physical market to open in June 2020.

The Sara Hardy Downtown Farmers Market online marketplace will allow for single customer transactions from multiple farms. Customers will place orders throughout the week for pick-up on market days. The platform will also allow for food assistance programs to be redeemed for purchases, including SNAP, P-EBT, Double Up Food Bucks, Project Fresh, Senior Project Fresh, Hoophouses for Health, and Munson Health Care’s Prescriptions for Health.

Processes for Customers

Orders may be placed online and confirmed by 10 am the Thursday prior to pick up.

Credit card payment will be processed on Saturday at 9 am with receipt sent.

Emailed receipts will include order information and pickup information/time assigned by last name.

When Customer arrives at assigned time to Lot B, a “social distance line” will be clearly marked. While in line, they should have their order confirmation/ID ready.

Customer is to wait until staff sends them to to one of three Check Out Stations.

One station will be designated for cash/EBT transactions while the other two are meant for prepaid transactions.

Once at a Check Out Station, Customers will meet 2 staff individuals –  1 staff will check their order/ID, while the other  retrieves the order.

ABOUT THE MARKET

The Sara Hardy Downtown Farmers Market was taken over by the DDA in 1984. Named after one of the area’s leading philanthropists, our market has been a grassroots market that started with less than ten vendors. It has now grown to be one of the top 3 largest markets in the state (and the largest growers only market)! We serve over 115 local area farmers throughout our season and hope to accommodate more in the coming years.

We are governed by the DDA Board, but have a passionate Farmers Market Advisory Board that helps the DDA with major decisions in the management of our market. The Farmers Market Advisory Board consists of vendors, customers, DDA representative(s), and City Commission representative(s).

Our market also firmly believes in food accessibility in our region and support the following Food Assistance Programs: EBT/SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks, Senior Project Fresh, Project Fresh, & Hoophouses for Health.

In 2016, the Michigan Farmers Market Association conducted an Economic Impact Study. To view that report, please visit our reports page here.

Our market is a pet free and smoke free market. We apologize for any inconvenience.
